Dani raised her eyebrows. “Shit.” She said simply. That was quite a record he had going there. He was a complete heartbreaker. “That’s quite a record for heartbreak you got going.”
Ashton shrugged. “Oh well. I’m over it all now.” Ashton said, licking his lips. “It’s funny, because I live with my second ex girlfriend.” Ashton said, chuckling a little.
Dani blinked. She must have been that Dianna girl she saw that one day. “Well, that sounds… interesting.” She said, arching her eyebrows. “Why do you live with her?”
Ashton licked his lips, gulping down more of his milkshake. He sighed softly. “It’s a personal reason. But she lives with me.” Ashton said, nodding. He finished his milkshake up, before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. “Why don’t you believe in love?”
“That’s awesome! Do you go under cover or something?” Carter asked, a glint of childlike hope in her eyes. It was like a little fantasy or something, she thought. “I mean, what kinds of things to do uncover? Like, scandals and stuff like that? It must be so cool!” She rambled without getting to much of a point, leaving Ashton trying to fit in a word edgewise.
Ashton laughed a little at her reaction. “Yeah, scandals and such. If there’s a restaurant that had a cockroach in their salad or something, we go there undercover and find out how sanitary their restaurant is. Simple things.” Ashton said with a shrug. He loved his job, truly. “Then we write about it in the paper.”
Carter giggled, not even trying to hide it. “You used to write poems? Oh, God…And you didn’t even show me any of them!” She said, taking a drink of her water. “That’s so sweet, though. You were always the poetic type.” She mused, tapping her fingers on the edge of the table.
“What sort of things do you report on? Current events, opinion pieces, sports…?” She inquired, wishing that she knew more about Ashton’s current life. His friendship had just slipped through her fingers after she left.
Ashton laughed sheepishly. “I only didn’t show them to you because I didn’t like them very much. I loved writing them, but I didn’t think they were any good.” Ashton said with a shrug. “My dad had all of them now. He thinks they’re ‘precious’.” Ashton said, rolling his eyes a little with a smile.
“I do news reports. It’s usually with investigations. I work with another man a woman. We’re like our news’ Investigation Group.” Ashton said, licking his lips. “I don’t do sports or normal news reports, though.”
Ashton sat in the booth across from her, and he licked his lips. He kept his eyes on her as she spoke before he picked up a menu and started to look through it. “Are you okay with a large surpreme with a side of hot wings?” Ashton asked, looking up from his menu towards her.
“I could marry you right now.” Carter replied, setting the menu down. “Great minds think alike.” She said, getting up to order. Upon returning, she was more perky than usual. “They said it’d be done soon. So, how’d you get into journalism?” She inquired, looking over at Ashton.
Ashton almost believed her for a second when she said she’d marry him, but he mentally shrugged off the thought. Ashton watched her leave to order. Why did he feel so nervous around Carter? Was it because he was slightly attracted to her..? Ashton didn’t know.
When Carter came back, he heard her ask him what got him into journalism and he licked his lips. “Honestly, when we were friends I loved to write poetry. That’s cheesy I know, but that’s what I liked to do. So, when I had to start making career choices, I thought about writing. Well, journalism came across my mind.”
Ashton’s thought immediately redirected over to Lacey and Stella. He laughed, rolling his eyes. “You’re right about that one..” Ashton said, shaking his head. He chuckled again, looking down at the ground as he remembered how ridiculous he used to be.
“Oh, here. Almost walked past it.” Carter said, pulling Ashton into the restaurant. Her stomach growled and she laughed, getting a table. “Whatever we get, it better come fast.” She said, opening up a menu. “I just want to buy everything at the moment, but it’s up to you, my treat.”
Ashton sat in the booth across from her, and he licked his lips. He kept his eyes on her as she spoke before he picked up a menu and started to look through it. “Are you okay with a large surpreme with a side of hot wings?” Ashton asked, looking up from his menu towards her.
Ashton thought about this. He should probably do what Carter was suggesting - lost relationships for a while, be single, and enjoy flings with certain girls every now and then. Ashton didn’t see what was wrong with it, and neither did Carter. That was a good thing if Carter was for it, considering she was a girl.
“You’re right. You’re absolutely right, Car.” Ashton said, nodding casually. “Why not be single for a while?” Ashton said with a shrug. Ashton felt a little accomplished right about now. Having a solution to his ongoing problem felt great.
“Yeah, go on, get some.” Carter encouraged. “I mean, that’s the best way to get over somebody. And you’re cute, Ashton. You can have a girl in your lap like this.” She said, snapping her fingers. “Take a look around. Greaser girls might not be the cream of the crop, but hey, a lot of them are dandy. I mean, girls like Steel stem from this group.” She explained, gesturing around the Dingo with a nod of her head.
Ashton nodded. From what others had told him, he was good looking. So, he figured it wouldn’t be hard to hook up with a few girls and simply get over relationships for a while. Ashton licked his lips. “Alright, I’ll start.” Ashton said. He got up from his seat on her couch, walking to her door. “Thanks Car.” Ashton said, sending her a smile before he left.
